THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c) V3.0C
Copyright 1990 by S.T.Calise
Mailing Address: 673 Herbertsville Road, Brick NJ 08724 USA
Read further for QUICK START installation and run.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c) is a SHELL utility program for McAfee's
virus fighter programs VIRUSCAN, CLEAN, and VALIDATE. TERMINUS is
menu driven and can be used with a mouse or keyboard. One of the
main objectives in writing this program was to help reduce the amount
of user input required each time a file is scanned, cleaned or paced
through the validate functions. The SCAN/CLEAN program switches have
been made visible and can be toggled through an easy to use interface.
Reports may be viewed, printed, merged or deleted. DOS BATCH files
may be run directly from The VIRUS TERMINUS.
Version 3.0C of The VIRUS TERMINUS supports the McAfee
Associates' VCOPY.EXE program. Single and/or batch file copy is offered
within each submenu.
TERMINUS was designed to run from a hard disk but will
work satisfactorily if installed on a high capacity floppy (720K,
1.2MEG, or 1.44MEG disk size) BOOT drive where the main objective is
to quickly sanitize an already infected system. It caters to the
low-end of the video standard spectrum by offering compatibility with
IBM MDA monochrome, IBM CGA Color and those systems that utilize the
IBM CGA standard but employ a money saving green, amber or white
monochrome display device.
THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c) is simple, easy to use, it gets the job done!
********************
The VIRUS TERMINUS(c) may not be used in a business, corporation, government
or agency environment without a negotiated site license. All rights are
strictly reserved. Read VTEC.DOC for further information.

versions. Please DELETE ALL earlier version VIRUS TERMINUS files
including the file VTEC.CFG before you install this version!
***** QUICK START:
The VIRUS TERMINUS(c) is a SHELL and requires the following programs
for full access to ALL functions:
SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS:
PC/MS DOS V2.1 - 5.0
Version 7.6 v77- v84 - SCAN, CLEAN; VALIDATE.COM; VCOPY.EXE
from McAfee Associates (See Version notes in VTEC.DOC)
NOTE: This version of The Virus Terminus was lightly tested under
MS DOS version 5.0
Make sure you have the following files from each(* see below *) of the
above in the same subdirectory for hard disk installation or on the
same (* see note *) floppy for quick start and access to all TERMINUS
functions:
McAfee Associates files: SCAN.EXE; CLEAN.EXE; VALIDATE.COM;
VIRLIST.TXT; VCOPY.EXE
VIRUS TERMINUS files : VTEC30C.EXE; VTECHELP.EXE;
VTECDPF.EXE; MAKELIST.EXE
MS/PC DOS files required : COMMAND.COM
***** NOTE: This version of VIRUS TERMINUS allows the use of separate
subdirectories for TERMINUS, SCAN, CLEAN and VCOPY.
However, YOU MUST PLACE VIRLIST.TXT and VALIDATE.COM from
McAfee Associates in the SAME directory as the VIRUS
TERMINUS files.
***** NOTE: VCOPY.EXE is not a requirement for SCAN, CLEAN, or
VALIDATE operations. You may leave this file off your
disk if you don't wish to utilize the file copy facility
or if you don't as of yet have a copy of VCOPY.EXE.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RUN TERMINUS FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE IF IT IS ALREADY
INFECTED WITH A VIRUS. USE THE FLOPPY INSTALLATION INSTEAD! DO NOT
RUN ANY PROGRAMS LOCATED ON YOUR HARD DISK UNTIL ALL FILES AND YOUR
ENTIRE SYSTEM IS DISINFECTED.
HARD DRIVE: 1. Create one subdirectory(see above) for SCAN,CLEAN
,VALIDATE,VIRLIST, VCOPY and THE VIRUS TERMINUS
files.
2. Copy McAfee Associates and VIRUS TERMINUS files
to the subdirectory.
* 3. Change the current drive and subdirectory to the
location of The VIRUS TERMINUS and then run the
file VTEC30C.EXE. Press <ENTER> after typing each
of the following lines.
C:
cd\
cd\location
vtec30C.exe
C: may be D: or whatever drive you installed
The VIRUS TERMINUS program on. cd\location
may be cd\utility\viruscan or any subdirectory
you placed the TERMINUS files in.
4. Press F5 to configure. Then use main menu select
#5 to create VCLEAN.LST
FLOPPY : 1. Shut your system down if it is already infected.
BOOT from a clean non-infected DOS system disk.
Use FORMAT.COM from this disk to make a new
formatted data disk - DON'T USE ANY FILES or
UTILITIES ON YOUR HARD DISK if your system is
infected.
2. Copy McAfee Associates and VIRUS TERMINUS
files to the ROOT directory disk. Copy your shell
or file utility to the disk if there's room.
3. Copy COMMAND.COM to the disk. the disk!
* 4. Place this disk in the BOOT drive(the drive
where you would place the DOS system disk
when you first start your machine - DRIVE #A)
TYPE the following lines pressing <ENTER>
after each to run TERMINUS:
A:
cd\
vtec30C.exe
Press F5 to configure. Then press #5 at the main
menu to create VCLEAN.LST
***** NOW write protect the disk! *****
*****
The CURRENT DRIVE and SUBDIRECTORY must be the location of the
VIRUS TERMINUS file set. Failure to change over to the TERMINUS
drive and subdirectory will cause you to have to re-configure
and modify the default table each time you run the program. The
default table is always loaded in from the current drive and
subdirectory at the time you startup The VIRUS TERMINUS.
You may create a DOS BATCH file with the loading sequence
previously outlined in HARD DRIVE step #3 and FLOPPY step #4
installation instructions.
*****
* Start your machine up (BOOT) from a clean non-infected floppy DOS
disk if your system is infected. Disinfect and then run the VIRUS
TERMINUS from your hard disk. The report function of SCAN/CLEAN will
not work because your floppy disk will be write protected!
Please read VTEC.DOC for more detailed installation instructions.
***** LAST MINUTE UPDATE INFORMATION *****

SCAN/CLEAN VERSION NOTES
Beginning with Version 7.6v77 of SCAN and CLEAN an additional option
for RAM memory check was added. SCAN and CLEAN normally only check
memory for "critical and stealth" viruses. The /M option instructs
VIRUSCAN to also check for an additional group of selected viruses
which are listed in the SCAN.EXE documentation.
The VIRUS TERMINUS v3.0C directly implements this switch. Each time
you switch MEMORY SCAN to the ON! position it will be added to the
list of options sent to VIRUSCAN. Setting MEMORY SCAN to OFF adds
the /NOMEM option which disables /M .
*****
SCAN/CLEAN v82 incorporated two new options: /MAINT and /CHKHI.
These options are now available as submenu switches which may be
conveniently turned on or off with the mouse or by keyboard. A check
is made to determine if you are running DOS version 4.x or higher.
If you are not the /MAINT option switch is disabled and a warning
prompt is displayed if you attempt to engage it. The /CHKHI option
allows checking of RAM from 640K to 1088K(1024K) for virus infection.
Please read your SCAN/CLEAN docs for information on how these options
relate to SCAN/CLEAN operations.
*****
v2.5A 1. Online configuration process improved to help provide
successful installation.
2. SCAN/CLEAN files submenu selection #1 and #3 lead the
user directly to the directory pick list. It is no longer
necessary to press CTRL-P to select a directory/path before
SCANning or CLEANing files.
3. SCAN/CLEAN drive submenu selection #1 and #3 lead the
user directly to the drive selection list. It is no longer
necessary to press CTRL-D to select a logical drive before
SCANning or CLEANing files.
4. The default table was modified to include separate directories
for the VIRUS TERMINUS, SCAN.EXE, CLEAN.EXE and VCOPY.EXE.
All four defaults may be identical or completely different
from each other, etc. The user need not group ALL TERMINUS
and McAfee Associates' files in one directory. However, the
files VIRLIST.TXT and VALIDATE.COM from McAfee Associates MUST
BE IN THE SAME SUBDIRECTORY AS THE VIRUS TERMINUS!
5. VCOPY.EXE implementation has been added to each submenu.
6. User toggled /fr FRENCH switch was added to the validation
submenu.
7. SCAN/CLEAN report appending has been eliminated. SCAN/CLEAN
version #80 now provides this information.
8. 360K disk installation is not offered as an option due to
increased program sizes. Use 720K, 1.2MEG, 1.44MEG disks if
floppy installation is required.
v2.6A 1. Consideration and trapping for logical drive B: on single
floppy drive systems was added to main program and vtecdpf.exe
2. Pathfinder capacity increased . A manual entry function was
added to allow users to select paths/dirs not found on the
list.
3. Update/Upgrade policy liberalized.(read VTEC.DOC)
v3.0 1. Visual / audible virus warning messages revised. It is
now possible to halt program execution at any virus warning
point. Option is available to continue if so desired.
2. Path/Dir/file selection/display list function capacity
increased to 512 entries. Manual entry provided where
appropriate.
3. Instant update/upgrade added for REGISTERED users.
4. Insufficient memory warning added to opening sequence of
program. Memory free(RAM not DISK space) should be at least
200KB after TERMINUS is up and running. Expanded and/or
extended memory is not included in the memory free report.
5. Save Defaults? prompt now issued every time when leaving
the default submenu. Previously, this prompt was activated
only if any of the existing defaults were changed.
6. Selected submenu functions simplified for ease of operation.
7. Directory display for file selection now shows file size -
date/time - attributes of individual files, etc.
8. Command line options expanded. Previously checksnow was set
to true and now is offered as an option.(READ FURTHER)
9. The MEMORY! scan menu control switch now automatically
sends the /M option to SCAN/CLEAN. As before the /NOMEM option
is sent when the MEMORY! switch is set to OFF. As a result
memory scans for virus infection will take slightly longer.
The /M option will tell VIRUSCAN to check system memory for
ALL known computer viruses that can inhabit memory. Only
critical and "stealth" viruses are checked for when the /M
option is not present. Previously, the /M option would have
to be entered into the TERMINUS default table.
10. /CHKHI and /MAINT options may now be switched in or out with
the mouse or keyboard while in the SCAN/CLEAN Files or Drive
submenu.
Please take the time to read the INSTALLATION procedures found
in VTEC.DOC . The TERMINUS is error trapped for MISSING program
files(SCAN.EXE, CLEAN.EXE etc.) and will refuse to perform functions
associated with the required files if they don't exist in the DEFAULT
specified subdirectories. REMEMBER: TERMINUS is not a stand alone
utility, it is a SHELL for SCAN, CLEAN, VCOPY, and VALIDATE.
The VIRUS TERMINUS v3.0 first checks for missing programs before
you reach the main menu screen. A check for missing programs is also
performed each time you exit the default area, return from your
SHELL or file utility, and each time you use VCOPY.
The first time you run VTEC30C.EXE make sure you go no further
than the MAIN MENU before you press F5 and make the needed additions
or corrections to the DEFAULT TABLE.
*****
Version 3.0 has TWO HELP keys, F10 which is still displayed
in the lower function menu bar and F1. Each key produces the same
result. This addition was made for new users who are normally
familiar with pressing F1 for HELP in certain other programs.
*****
THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c) achieves optimum performance when it is
installed and run from a hard drive. However, it is best to run the
VIRUS TERMINUS from a floppy if your computer system is known to be
infected. THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c), SCAN.EXE, CLEAN.EXE, VALIDATE.COM
and VCOPY will all fit on a high capacity floppy provided you follow
the installation instructions ABOVE or in the program documentation
file VTEC.DOC . (720k , 1.2 Meg, 1.44 Meg disk size)
*****
IF you have IBM CGA C80 mode compatibility(you can run programs
which require color 80 column text IBM CGA mode) but utilize a money
saving green, amber, white etc. monochrome display, start TERMINUS
like this:
A> VTEC30C.EXE M (press return)
This will eliminate window background colors and adjust certain other
textcolors so you may be able to SEE all menu selects, prompts, etc.
The mouse will still function if you have one. NOTE: TRUE IBM MDA
monochrome display cards are auto-detected and there is no need for
the extra parameter when starting TERMINUS.
*****
If you have an older cga adapter and experience "snow" during
screen updates you may invoke the /S command line parameter:
A> VTEC30C.EXE S (press return)
The /S and /M commmands may be combined. Don't put a space between
the two characters:
A> VTEC30C.EXE MS (press return)
