  9.          PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

  11.               THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c) is a SHELL utility program for McAfee's
  12.          virus fighter programs VIRUSCAN, CLEAN, and VALIDATE. TERMINUS is
  13.          menu driven and can be used with a mouse or keyboard. One of the
  14.          main objectives in writing this program was to help reduce the amount
  15.          of user input required each time a file is scanned, cleaned or paced
  16.          through the validate functions. The SCAN/CLEAN program switches have
  17.          been made visible and can be toggled through an easy to use interface.
  18.          Reports may be viewed, printed, merged or deleted. DOS BATCH files
  19.          may be run directly from The VIRUS TERMINUS.

  21.               Version 3.0C of The VIRUS TERMINUS supports the McAfee
  22.          Associates' VCOPY.EXE program. Single and/or batch file copy is offered
  23.          within each submenu.

  25.               TERMINUS was designed to run from a hard disk but will
  26.          work satisfactorily if installed on a high capacity floppy (720K,
  27.          1.2MEG, or 1.44MEG disk size) BOOT drive where the main objective is
  28.          to quickly sanitize an already infected system. It caters to the
  29.          low-end of the video standard spectrum by offering compatibility with
  30.          IBM MDA monochrome, IBM CGA Color and those systems that utilize the
  31.          IBM CGA standard but employ a money saving green, amber or white
  32.          monochrome display device.

  94.          ***** NOTE: This version of VIRUS TERMINUS allows the use of separate
  95.                      subdirectories for TERMINUS, SCAN, CLEAN and VCOPY.
  96.                      However, YOU MUST PLACE VIRLIST.TXT and VALIDATE.COM from
  97.                      McAfee Associates in the SAME directory as the VIRUS
  98.                      TERMINUS files.

  100.          ***** NOTE: VCOPY.EXE is not a requirement for SCAN, CLEAN, or
  101.                      VALIDATE operations. You may leave this file off your
  102.                      disk if you don't wish to utilize the file copy facility
  103.                      or if you don't as of yet have a copy of VCOPY.EXE.

  108.          DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RUN TERMINUS FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE IF IT IS ALREADY
  109.          INFECTED WITH A VIRUS. USE THE FLOPPY INSTALLATION INSTEAD! DO NOT
  110.          RUN ANY PROGRAMS LOCATED ON YOUR HARD DISK UNTIL ALL FILES AND YOUR
  111.          ENTIRE SYSTEM IS DISINFECTED.

  113.               HARD DRIVE:  1. Create one subdirectory(see above) for SCAN,CLEAN
  114.                               ,VALIDATE,VIRLIST, VCOPY and THE VIRUS TERMINUS
  115.                               files.

  117.                            2. Copy McAfee Associates and VIRUS TERMINUS files
  118.                               to the subdirectory.
  119.  
  120.                          * 3. Change the current drive and subdirectory to the
  121.                               location of The VIRUS TERMINUS and then run the
  122.                               file VTEC30C.EXE. Press <ENTER> after typing each
  123.                               of the following lines.

  130.                               C: may be D: or whatever drive you installed
  131.                               The VIRUS TERMINUS program on. cd\location

  135.                            4. Press F5 to configure. Then use main menu select
  136.                               #5 to create VCLEAN.LST
  137.

  139.               FLOPPY :     1. Shut your system down if it is already infected.
  140.                               BOOT from a clean non-infected DOS system disk.
  141.                               Use FORMAT.COM from this disk to make a new
  142.                               formatted data disk - DON'T USE ANY FILES or
  143.                               UTILITIES ON YOUR HARD DISK if your system is
  144.                               infected.

  146.                            2. Copy McAfee Associates and VIRUS TERMINUS
  147.                               files to the ROOT directory disk. Copy your shell
  148.                               or file utility to the disk if there's room.
  149.  
  150.                            3. Copy COMMAND.COM to the disk.                               the disk!

  155.                          * 4. Place this disk in the BOOT drive(the drive
  156.                               where you would place the DOS system disk
  157.                               when you first start your machine - DRIVE #A)

  166.                               Press F5 to configure. Then press #5 at the main

  174.             The CURRENT DRIVE and SUBDIRECTORY must be the location of the
  175.             VIRUS TERMINUS file set. Failure to change over to the TERMINUS
  176.             drive and subdirectory will cause you to have to re-configure
  177.             and modify the default table each time you run the program. The
  178.             default table is always loaded in from the current drive and
  179.             subdirectory at the time you startup The VIRUS TERMINUS.

  181.                You may create a DOS BATCH file with the loading sequence
  182.                previously outlined in HARD DRIVE step #3 and FLOPPY step #4
  183.                installation instructions.

  188.          * Start your machine up (BOOT) from a clean non-infected floppy DOS
  189.            disk if your system is infected. Disinfect and then run the VIRUS
  190.            TERMINUS from your hard disk. The report function of SCAN/CLEAN will
  191.            not work because your floppy disk will be write protected!

  198.                              SCAN/CLEAN VERSION NOTES
  199.  
  200.          Beginning with Version 7.6v77 of SCAN and CLEAN an additional option
  201.          for RAM memory check was added. SCAN and CLEAN normally only check
  202.          memory for "critical and stealth" viruses. The /M option instructs
  203.          VIRUSCAN to also check for an additional group of selected viruses
  204.          which are listed in the SCAN.EXE documentation.
  205.  
  206.          The VIRUS TERMINUS v3.0C directly implements this switch. Each time
  207.          you switch MEMORY SCAN to the ON! position it will be added to the
  208.          list of options sent to VIRUSCAN. Setting MEMORY SCAN to OFF adds
  209.          the /NOMEM option which disables /M .

  214.               SCAN/CLEAN v82 incorporated two new options: /MAINT and /CHKHI.
  215.          These options are now available as submenu switches which may be
  216.          conveniently turned on or off with the mouse or by keyboard. A check
  217.          is made to determine if you are running DOS version 4.x or higher.
  218.          If you are not the /MAINT option switch is disabled and a warning
  219.          prompt is displayed if you attempt to engage it. The /CHKHI option
  220.          allows checking of RAM from 640K to 1088K(1024K) for virus infection.
  221.          Please read your SCAN/CLEAN docs for information on how these options
  222.          relate to SCAN/CLEAN operations.

  227.        v2.5A  1. Online configuration process improved to help provide
  228.                  successful installation.

  230.               2. SCAN/CLEAN files submenu selection #1 and #3 lead the
  231.                  user directly to the directory pick list. It is no longer
  232.                  necessary to press CTRL-P to select a directory/path before
  233.                  SCANning or CLEANing files.

  235.               3. SCAN/CLEAN drive submenu selection #1 and #3 lead the
  236.                  user directly to the drive selection list. It is no longer
  237.                  necessary to press CTRL-D to select a logical drive before
  238.                  SCANning or CLEANing files.

  240.               4. The default table was modified to include separate directories
  241.                  for the VIRUS TERMINUS, SCAN.EXE, CLEAN.EXE and VCOPY.EXE.
  242.                  All four defaults may be identical or completely different
  243.                  from each other, etc. The user need not group ALL TERMINUS
  244.                  and McAfee Associates' files in one directory. However, the
  245.                  files VIRLIST.TXT and VALIDATE.COM from McAfee Associates MUST
  246.                  BE IN THE SAME SUBDIRECTORY AS THE VIRUS TERMINUS!

  248.               5. VCOPY.EXE implementation has been added to each submenu.
  249.  
  250.               6. User toggled /fr FRENCH switch was added to the validation
  251.                  submenu.
  252.  
  253.               7. SCAN/CLEAN report appending has been eliminated. SCAN/CLEAN
  254.                  version #80 now provides this information.
  255.  
  256.               8. 360K disk installation is not offered as an option due to
  257.                  increased program sizes. Use 720K, 1.2MEG, 1.44MEG disks if
  258.                  floppy installation is required.

  260.        v2.6A  1. Consideration and trapping for logical drive B: on single
  261.                  floppy drive systems was added to main program and vtecdpf.exe
  262.  
  263.               2. Pathfinder capacity increased . A manual entry function was
  264.                  added to allow users to select paths/dirs not found on the
  265.                  list.

  267.               3. Update/Upgrade policy liberalized.(read VTEC.DOC)

  271.        v3.0   1. Visual / audible virus warning messages revised. It is
  272.                  now possible to halt program execution at any virus warning
  273.                  point. Option is available to continue if so desired.

  275.               2. Path/Dir/file selection/display list function capacity
  276.                  increased to 512 entries. Manual entry provided where
  277.                  appropriate.

  279.               3. Instant update/upgrade added for REGISTERED users.

  281.               4. Insufficient memory warning added to opening sequence of
  282.                  program. Memory free(RAM not DISK space) should be at least
  283.                  200KB after TERMINUS is up and running. Expanded and/or
  284.                  extended memory is not included in the memory free report.

  286.               5. Save Defaults? prompt now issued every time when leaving
  287.                  the default submenu. Previously, this prompt was activated
  288.                  only if any of the existing defaults were changed.

  290.               6. Selected submenu functions simplified for ease of operation.

  292.               7. Directory display for file selection now shows file size -
  293.                  date/time - attributes of individual files, etc.

  295.               8. Command line options expanded. Previously checksnow was set
  296.                  to true and now is offered as an option.(READ FURTHER)

  298.               9. The MEMORY! scan menu control switch now automatically
  299.                  sends the /M option to SCAN/CLEAN. As before the /NOMEM option
  300.                  is sent when the MEMORY! switch is set to OFF. As a result
  301.                  memory scans for virus infection will take slightly longer.
  302.                  The /M option will tell VIRUSCAN to check system memory for
  303.                  ALL known computer viruses that can inhabit memory. Only
  304.                  critical and "stealth" viruses are checked for when the /M
  305.                  option is not present. Previously, the /M option would have
  306.                  to be entered into the TERMINUS default table.

  308.              10. /CHKHI and /MAINT options may now be switched in or out with
  309.                  the mouse or keyboard while in the SCAN/CLEAN Files or Drive
  310.                  submenu.

  312.               Please take the time to read the INSTALLATION procedures found
  313.          in VTEC.DOC . The TERMINUS is error trapped for MISSING program
  314.          files(SCAN.EXE, CLEAN.EXE etc.) and will refuse to perform functions
  315.          associated with the required files if they don't exist in the DEFAULT
  316.          specified subdirectories. REMEMBER: TERMINUS is not a stand alone
  317.          utility, it is a SHELL for SCAN, CLEAN, VCOPY, and VALIDATE.

  319.               The VIRUS TERMINUS v3.0 first checks for missing programs before
  320.          you reach the main menu screen. A check for missing programs is also
  321.          performed each time you exit the default area, return from your
  322.          SHELL or file utility, and each time you use VCOPY.

  324.               The first time you run VTEC30C.EXE make sure you go no further
  325.          than the MAIN MENU before you press F5 and make the needed additions
  326.          or corrections to the DEFAULT TABLE.

  334.               Version 3.0 has TWO HELP keys, F10 which is still displayed
  335.          in the lower function menu bar and F1. Each key produces the same
  336.          result. This addition was made for new users who are normally
  337.          familiar with pressing F1 for HELP in certain other programs.

  341.               THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c) achieves optimum performance when it is
  342.          installed and run from a hard drive. However, it is best to run the
  343.          VIRUS TERMINUS from a floppy if your computer system is known to be
  344.          infected. THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c), SCAN.EXE, CLEAN.EXE, VALIDATE.COM
  345.          and VCOPY will all fit on a high capacity floppy provided you follow
  346.          the installation instructions ABOVE or in the program documentation
  347.          file VTEC.DOC . (720k , 1.2 Meg, 1.44 Meg disk size)

  350.               IF you have IBM CGA C80 mode compatibility(you can run programs
  351.          which require color 80 column text IBM CGA mode) but utilize a money
  352.          saving green, amber, white etc. monochrome display, start TERMINUS
  353.          like this:

  357.          This will eliminate window background colors and adjust certain other
  358.          textcolors so you may be able to SEE all menu selects, prompts, etc.
  359.          The mouse will still function if you have one. NOTE: TRUE IBM MDA
  360.          monochrome display cards are auto-detected and there is no need for
  361.          the extra parameter when starting TERMINUS.

  366.          screen updates you may invoke the /S command line parameter:
